There are a number of interesting literary magazines being published at the moment. My current favourite is World Literature Today. Its mixture of features, interviews, extracts from forthcoming translations and poetry never fails to fascinate. I find the reviews scattered throughout particularly deadly to the bank balance.
I have a digital subscription but for the 350th issue I decided to treat myself to the hard copy. This, of course, had nothing to do with the fact that Julia Franck, author of the unforgettable German book-prize winning Blind Side of the Heart graces the front cover.
All I can say is that in the flesh this magazine is a wondrous thing and I wish the hard copy subscription was affordable. But the price of postage from USA is extortionate and that’s the reason why I’m limiting this blog hop giveaway to Europe.
The first copy sent to me went awol. I received a replacement copy in December, just 5 days after requesting it. (Too late, unfortunately for German Literature Month – aha now you know the reason I ordered it ….). This giveaway copy, originally ordered early October, dropped through the letterbox in January. Now that it has finally arrived in Europe, let’s keep it here.
You can view the table of contents here.
To enter for the giveaway, which is open to anyone with a European address, simply leave a comment. And while it won’t increase your chances of winning, I’d be delighted if you would write a word or two about the best piece of translated work you’ve read recently.
You have until midnight 13.02.2013 to enter. The winner will be selected via random.org and will be notified by email on the 14th. I reserve the right to select another winner if I do not receive a forwarding address within 3 days.

Just read the wonderful Who Killed Palomino Molero by Mario Vargas Llosa, translated by A MacAdam
Recently it would probably by Doppler by Erlend Loe. Loved his subtle humour and social commentary. This is a great idea for a prize by the way. I may have to investigate a subscription for myself!
A magazine for the hop? Very interesting and original! Recently I have been doing Russian literature at university (in translation) and I incidentally read three translations of The Inspector General by Gogol. Some jokes fell flat in one translation and some were brilliant in another.
I’d like to join in!
As I live in Belgium, most of the books you can find in the shops are translations, so I’ve read many of them. I read a translation of ‘I’ll steal you away’ by Niccolo Ammaniti in Dutch, but the orignal language is Italian and I think the translator did a good job!
Very intriguing giveaway. Hmm, translated… I don’t think I have read many translated works at all recently… It must have been re-read of “The Great Gatsby” from the end of the last year, which I read translated into Estonian, my mother tongue.
Nice idea – a magazine. I’m always on the look out for a nice book magazine.
Good translated fiction? Hmm, how about a thriller? The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino – not sure if you know it already.
Thanks for the fun giveaway and for joining the hop.
Hardly highbrow but I have enjoyed books by Andrea Camilleri. If this qualifies please add me to the giveaway.
Thanks for the giveaway! I don’t know that I’ve read any translated fiction (oh, wait.. “Beowulf!”)

Just finished War and Peace – and found it tough going, not likely to recommend to anyone!
Since I`m European and non-native English speaker I`ve read A LOT of translated works all my life. Only now I don`t read works translated from English because I read them in English (as much as possible).
Thanks for your fabulous and interesting prize! 🙂

Sounds a great magazine. Best translated work? It would have to be Broken Glass by the Congolese author Alain Mabanckou (written originally in French but I read in English). Such an unexpected treat
How have I not heard of this magazine before? It sounds amazing!
Most recent book I have read that was translated into English was Foucault’s Pendulum; interesting read, I quite enjoyed it anyway!
Thanks for a lovely giveaway. My comment from the 9th seems never to have posted so am trying again…! I have Blind Side of the Heart on my to be read pile. Recent good translated reads – Every Seventh Wave by Daniel Glattauer and The Library of Unrequited Love by Sophie Divry.
I am interested in the giveaway. Hopefully to win one of your favorite reads. Thank you
