I have discovered a couple of duplicates in my stacks!

If you are seeking inspiration for November (and didn’t find any in those lists I posted last week), perhaps one or both of these will appeal.

The first Motley Stones – a NYRB classics proof edition – is a selection of 19th century classic short stories and novellas from Austrian Adalbert Stifter. Translated by Isabel Fargo Cole, it contains his well-beloved novella Rock Crystal. With appreciative descriptions of nature, these stories, while dramatic, ultimately reflect belief that the world we live in is benign. I really enjoyed them and I will review in detail during Austria Week.

The second title is a complete contrast. The chilling dystopia depicted in Julia von Lucadou’s The High Rise Diver is anything but benign! I reviewed it earlier this year, and it has proved to be an unforgettable read.

Let me know in comments, if you’d like your name in the hat for one or both of these. I’ll be in touch at the beginning of next week, if your name is drawn on Sunday 24.10.2021.
