I've abandoned this one at the 148-page mark, which is highly unusual for me — I rarely abandon books (maybe a dozen in my entire lifetime!). I don't mind slow novels, but I found this one a little dull and all the historical detail — the islanders living conditions, the infant mortality etc — felt shoehorned in. I should probably point out that I have recently read two novels about infant mortality, one of which was set on an island, so perhaps the story felt a bit too familiar. In other words, the fault lies with me as a reader and not necessarily with the author.

I enjoyed this one so much, but for me its appeal was in its taking mission as a central theme. I agree about Neil, I appreciate that he was flawed but not easily condemned.
