I enjoyed this novel very much too. Startling insights into what comes from a leader using a religious text every morning like a daily personal horoscope. Hanif really shows up the absurd aspects of extremism in several areas of life.

..hmmn, maybe he just appeals to my fanciful imagination. I would say that Kafka on the shore, or perhaps the short stories (blind willow, sleeping woman) are good. They are frustrating in a way with his unusual rambling but the beauty of his writing is as mysterious as the stories. I suppose i could say that they are the musical equivalent of a bob dylan song, you might not like his voice but the lyrics are good.

Murakami? I've always felt he'd be a bit too surreal for me. But I won't really know until I try. Where's a good place to start?

Thanks for the review, i completely agree. I am adding Hanif's book to my shelf of favourites, along with Haruki Murakami, Garcia Marquez and De Bernieres. any recommendations for authors in that vein?

Must admit, I quite fancy the Berger. Just wondering how long it will be before there's a copy available at the library.

Pleased to see your positive thoughts on this one, Lizzy. It seems to have been well received all round, so I'll be keeping it back in my Booker longlist reading as something to look forward to, and tackling some of the more unsure offerings first (John Berger, anyone...?)

Great review! I happened upon this book at the library the day the Booker long list came out, so I picked it up without having any idea what it was about. Now I'm really excited to read it! (And if I like it, your review might just motivate me to finally read Catch-22; it's been sitting on my shelf for a while.)
